Pet Entrepreneur Interview: Elaine from Pet Homie
For this week’s feature of a pet entrepreneur, Cuzzey’s CEO, Jose He, interviews Elaine from Pet Homie – a pet grooming service provider.
Jose: Why did you want to start a pet business?
Elaine: I started the business because of my passion for pets
Jose: Tell us your Story (How did your business start?)
Elaine: In 2002, I dropped out of school, and decided to learn to groom. After graduating from the grooming course, I became a freelancer, grooming (pets) at homes for a year to build up my confidence. Then, I stepped out of my comfort zone and freelance in a pet shop for another 6 months. Finally, in 2004, I started my pet shop.
Jose: What is your biggest challenge as a pet business?
Elaine: For my business, some dogs are difficult to deal with, and it’s a challenge that I take to give them a nice cut.
However, the biggest challenge is dealing with customers. Our service involves caring for the pets’ well-being. They are not stuffed toys. The responsibility that Pet Homie have is enormous, especially when it comes to our pet sitting service. We have to ensure that all dogs are safe during their stay.
Jose: Best advice to people who want to start a pet business.
Elaine: I strongly advise that you only start a business if you’re willing to sacrifice your time. You won’t get holidays and rest days. Also, you will need lots of patience. If not, please don’t commit. Haha.
Jose: What are your thoughts on the pet market in the next 5 years?
Elaine: Nowadays, there’s a lot of pet shops in Singapore. It’s not as easy as 15 years ago. I, personally, think that the next 5 years will be tough because AVA (Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore) are very strict towards pet-related businesses. Furthermore, they’ve newly built a farm-stay at Sungei Tengah. Pet sitters for private pet shops have to be in low profile.
