Pet Entrepreneur Interview: Brian From Superpets
Cuzzey is THE platform for all types of pets. Hence, we decided to interview Superpets’ owner, Brian, a pet entrepreneur who sells pet-related products. Superpets is the largest cat retailer in Singapore and even provide a room for cats to play while their owners are shopping!
Superpets used to be called Pets Dreamz that provided services such as pet sitting, transportation, vet visits to professional styling alongside selling pet-related products.
Jose: Why did you want to start a pet business
Brian: Since young, I’ve wanted to start a business. When my wife completed her pet-grooming course, we realized that there is a growing demand in the pet industry for such services. As both we both love animals and are now more financially stable, we decide to venture into this industry to fulfil this demand and our passion, as such Pets Dreamz was born.
Jose: Tell us your Story (How did your business start?)
Brian: My dad is also an entrepreneur. He’s in the construction business. Growing up, I’ve wanted to start my own business. We started out providing services and products but in 2014, we took a different path and changed our name. We chose Superpets because it was a catchier and recognizable for branding. I also decided to focus on a retail business model. I aim to be the brand that people will think about when buying for their pets. With focus, Superpets grew to be the first 24 hours operating pet store in Singapore. Our customers are important to us. We need to keep improving our product-range! Our goal is to have 20 outlets by 2022.
Jose: What is your biggest challenge as a pet business?
Brian: Starting out, we had no idea what we were doing. Every business has its risks, especially if its an industry you don’t know about. I had to educate myself so that I could be on par with my competitors in the pets’ industry. The challenge for us was the competition in the market. Some freelancers were charging much lower than us. That made it difficult for us to compete and survive.
Jose: Best advice to people who want to start a pet business.
Brian: As a pet entrepreneur who has penetrated the market, I have learnt never to give up and always go the extra mile. It motivates me to excel and improve in what I do anyway. But to have that, passion is the key factor. Without passion, all other quality is just secondary. Follow your heart and do what you love most. With that, you stand a good chance of being successful in what you do.
